Nokia’s Flexibility challenged by Samsung

The Nokia World event held recently revealed one of the more innovative technologies the world had to witness. The Flexible OLED Display called Nokia Kinetic Device. Nokia gave a demo of how this bending is more than a feature and has the potential to control the UI like bending in the middle enables zooming while that same at the edges allows scrolling.

It is actually an interestiong usage where bending the centre towards you zooms into the photo or zooms into one of the applications meaning it opens the app.It also works as the select button,to select a particular app, song, game…You get the point. On the contrary bending this Nokia Kinetic device away from you zooms out of the photo or out of the application.It basically function as the convention back key. Twisting the sides allows you to scroll down the gallery of photos or the songs in the music Player.One negative about this new interaction mode by Nokia is the obvious fact that it has to be operated with both the hands.

We have witnessed many many modes of interactions in the mobile worlds.The primary rock hard press buttons, soft keys, feather keys, touch pads, track pads and the touch screens, these twist screens seem to be the next thing. The moment Nokia’s Kinetic Device was displayed, Samsung did not hesitate to unveil what is had been developing, a similar ( claims to be better ) flexible OLED. Though Samsung announced the very same in the CES event this year, we never got any more news about it. Nokia World has indeed triggered the issue. Samsung indirectly states that their flexible display is better that Nokia’s in all possible ways and challenged Nokia on the same. The flexible screens from Samsung will be available in 2012 probably with different or similar interactions.The screen will penetrate the mobiles and then the tablets.

Nokia on the other hand are yet to install it in any device and gives us no hint on the future of the screens in Nokia phones. Regardless of the winner, these screen will reach us in the next year. Will these be the next revolution? Are we ready to move one from capacitive touchscreens to these folds? Could this be the foundation for Nokia Morph and Aeon ?
